Your author served in the Army and Air National Guards and is a middle school history teacher. I am also the wife of a retired Army First Sergeant, mother of two step-children who are Iraqi War veterans, daughter of a mother who served during the Korean War, sister of a Navy veteran and great-granddaughter of two (father and son) Revolutionary War veterans who crossed the Delaware River with George Washington, among other veteran relatives. Military service is a proud tradition for my loved ones and me.
I have been involved in community veterans’ events and projects since 2000 and have loved being an Honor Flight Guardian since 2012, meeting and talking with hundreds of veterans of all eras and experiences. I truly love veterans and their stories of serving.
One thing I have learned though is that few military veterans have recorded the details of their service for their loved ones. This recording could be hand-written or typed, audio or video taped, whatever mode is best for the veteran. I served: A military service reflection guide will give the veteran and their loved ones ideas and tools to easily record the details of military service.
In 2000 I had two spry World War II Marine combat Veterans come into my classroom. I listended to their amazing stories and watched the students reactions- we were all enthralled. I began to learn more and more that all who served had amazing stories and memories, and most never recorded them in any way. Then they passed away, and many of their military stories and memories went with them. This happened with my mother, who served in the Navy but passed away before I could get many details of her service experience.
I wrote this book because no comprehensive tool like this existed for Veterans and their loved ones, that I could find anyway. I hope use of it leads to many hours of remembering and sharing.
